Yesterday Man

Magazine: Propaganda (Swe, 3/96)

elegant MACHINERY shows us with their third CD-album that they, without any doubts, belong among the best synthpop-bands in Sweden.

elegant MACHINERY have without compromises transfered themselves 15 years back in time, in comparison to the more modern sound on the last album "Shattered Grounds". But this does not in any way mean that they lack any originality. They have their very own style, especially with Robert Enforsens caracteristic and expressive vocals, even if the music sometimes reminds you of bands like Yazoo, Rational Youth and the early Depeche Mode.

"Yesterday Man" is not as easy listened as the previous two albums, the first time you listen to it. But after a couple of times, songs like "Blind man dreams", "Love to cry" and "Save me" stucks to your mind. The songs is now much more uniform.

You can hear that the band has matured and that they have found their own style. elegant MACHINERY is not trying to hang on to present trends. Instead they play the music they want to, which makes "Yesterday Man" an album that lasts. This is without any doubts one of the best synthpop albums during this decade!

Wow! elegant MACHINERY shows us very clearly were they stand. The whole album has the same analogue sound, and you can almost distinguish how they struggle against the more modern electronic scene. The remarkable thing is that they choose to do something "extreme" as this, and still succeds in making a very good album. The vocals are as always excellent, and the sound so typical for elegant MACHINERY that you are amazed how they succeed every time. Very good, very good indeed.

Carl Lundgren

My first reaction when the CD-player started was very positive. This is very good, and you can hear that elegant MACHINERY has matured from the last album. And still they have managed to keep their special sound.

A couple of songs that first got stuck in my mind was "Save me" and "Fading away". "Save me" is beautiful, a little sad and dancable, while "Fading away" is a real nostalgic elegant song. Wonderful!

It will be very interesting to hear and see how the reaction on the dancefloor will be. The whole album is a nice production. This is an album made for parties. A big plus for the nice cover.
